Witch
Witch is an infected dressed in a torn black low-cut top and white underwear. She has blonde hair, long claws, and a large bloody mouth with several sharp teeth, which are only seen while she's charging or viciously attacking. Her arms are soaked in blood all the way up to her elbows.
Overview
Witch is a runner type enemy, who has an ability to charge into human units with almost double her normal speed, once she detects any of them. Her detection distance is very long, but she can only see units in a narrow line in front of her. She won't charge into support items. When triggering a regular attack, Witch always does two slashes that can't be interrupted.
Strategy
Witches, despite their low health, are very dangerous thanks to having very fast movement and attack speed as well as their tendency to spawn in groups. They can destroy any attempts to set up a proper defense and shred the Bus in a matter of seconds.
Ranged units tend to be the best options for neutralizing Witches, though their own fragility means they can be risky to use. Shotgunners and high ROF units can turn them into paste quickly, with shotgunners potentially hitting and sniping those outside of their line of fire with a stray pellet. Policeman Diaz, despite his high cost, often works well, as he is durable, has melee resistance, and his shotgun can delete several at once if sufficiently upgraded. The cheaper Farmer can accomplish this, but he isn't able to defend himself from melee threats well.
In terms of melee units, not many perform well, though their use may be ultimately necessary. Guard is a very good unit for this for medium-level players thanks to his great movement speed, damage, and health, but some players could get by with Grenadier. Fighters like Private Rodriguez and Redneck are overwhelmed easily, and require significant upgrades to be actually useful, though even then their applications are generally limited. Mechanic's sledgehammer attack potentially allows him to nuke several Witches at once, and can be a serviceable counter if they don't come too often.
Red Barrel and Molotov Cocktail are perfect tools for annihilating hordes of Witches, with Red Barrel's explosion being able to easily kill them. Additionally, both can be used to burn corpses of units that transform into Witches when slain. Keep in mind that they both require precise timing and must be deployed ahead of Witches to actually intercept them. To a lesser extent, this also applies to Nitrogen, but its very long cooldown and low damage greatly hinder its effectiveness, as it relies on disabling Witches for other units to do damage. In some cases, the Generator can be used as a high health obstacle that explodes and leaves a burning fire pool, but it simply costs too much to be effective when Red Barrel can achieve similar results with lower cost and cooldown.
Trivia
- Witch's general appearance and abilities are inspired by the zombie of the same name from the Left 4 Dead franchise, who is also known for her extreme speed and damage once provoked, and while still frail, poses a significant threat.
- Witches can be met as early as the second mission of the game since they always appear during the final wave.
