The Infected Metro is a gauntlet-styled gamemode where players have to progress through a set of stages in rapid succession, aiming to achieve the lowest time possible for supplies. It takes place in an abandoned metro system.

It can be accessed after a player has accumulated 90 Stars. It is found in the Stage Select menu.

Gameplay

Players must select a Station from the selection screen, each Station has three stages that must be beaten one after another. Each station requires no resources to start. The player must fight the set onscreen amount of enemies (notified by a counter in-game) and successfully kill them all. All enemies are in set positions, and will not change their position resulting in less RNG besides for enraged enemies. Once that is done, a player will move onto the next part. If the bus is destroyed, a player will not have to restart the entire Station, instead just the stage (or part). There is no penalty for losing besides restarting.

After every stage ends, the player will have their courage and rage reset, as though it were a completely new level. During a stage, additional enemies than the ones normally onscreen will appear from the right side of the stage. These enemies are not required to be killed, though most of the time it will be necessary.

If a pre-placed enemy can produce more enemies (I.E. Egg, Necromancer and Sapper), any spawned enemies from them must also be eliminated. Likewise, threats like Undead and Sergeant can only be removed from play by exhausting their revives or if torched. Marauders however are exceptions, and the level progresses as long as they have been slain before any turn.

In order to play, a set deck will need to be selected that cannot be modified during gameplay. Additionally starting Station 5, players will be required to bring a second deck into battle. Each stage from now on will have a second "part", in which the second deck will be used. Neither deck can consist of units used in another deck, so each deck must have wholly unique units. There is no option to switch between the decks while playing a stage, so strategy must be utilized for what units are brought.

All units gain an AI upgrade to look behind themselves incase an enemy gets behind them. They will then attempt to kill the enemy before facing forward again. Units will also stand idle if no zombies are alive.

Each stage has a set of rewards, consisting of Power Points and Buffs. The run can be quit at any time, and stars will be given based on the stages completed, however the run will not be considered finished and the rewards for the selected stage will not be earned.

List of Stations

The Infected Metro has 8 set Stations. Every Station has rewards for completing each stage, consisting of Power Points and Buffs. These rewards can only be claimed once per completion.

Additionally, each station will have a set of objectives to complete, if completed the player will be rewarded with a star. These stars go towards a counter for each station, with a goal post at 3, 6 and 9 stars respectively with increasing rewards. The star rewards are always as follows:

Strategy

  • Because of how fire damage can stack, Flamethrower, Red Barrel, Molotov and Carlos (with level 13 Special Ability) can all significantly contribute to overall DPS if used correctly.
  • Shotgunners are great for spread damage and taking down waves, especially Farmer and Lester.
  • Fury and Extra Courage are both useful for speeding things up.
  • For stages that include Marauders, always bring bullet resistant units to ward off their ranged weapons.
  • HRoF units such as Carlos or Sonya are essential for DPS.
  • The Police Team Power can provide a much needed ammo boost to many ranged, notably shotgunners. As such, Agents with their Special Ability can be useful to save slots.
  • Ranger's level 13 Special Ability can easily knock vulnerable enemies away to save ground.
  • Most support items' preparation timers are simply too long and can be outright unusable, even with the 2/2 Jailers Team Power.
  • Dr. Norman and Nitrogen can be used to dramatically slow enemies.
  • Builder Abby with Fury and the Hunter items can mow down many enemies that aren't resistant to bullets.
  • Drone can group enemies together, making them easier to target.

Trivia

  • Infected Metro is the only area where two decks are used at once.
  • The Infected Metro badge is the second unique player badge added, the other being Skirmish tiers.
