Rednecks logo.png Redneck is a man from a farm in the countryside. He is armed with a shovel and dressed in black pants and a blue and white baseball cap.

Mechanic logo.png Hillbilly is Redneck's first exclusive skin. He is armed with a shovel and dressed in a gray tank top, blue pants, and a black automobile repair shop cap.

College logo.png Waterboy is Redneck's second exclusive skin. He is armed with a shovel and dressed in a white shirt underneath a maroon and yellow-striped jersey, black pants, and a backward maroon and white cap.

Northerners logo.png Worthy is Redneck's third exclusive skin. He wears a gnome cap with brown hair sticking out, a cape, a grey polo shirt, and grey pants.

Although listed as a Star Reward, Redneck is available to players from the start.

Overview

Redneck is a Fighter unit. He is a very expendable unit, costing a low amount of courage and preparing rapidly in a few seconds, but at a cost of having low health. His melee damage is low and he has moderate attack speed, together with slow critical attacks.

Redneck has no perks. Some time after dying, he turns into a Zombie.

Special Ability

Redneck's special ability adds 3 points to his movement speed, totaling to 19.

Because this bonus is pretty low, there's little reason to invest into it. Redneck's movement speed is already very high, and marginally increasing it won't have a noticeable impact on his ability to respond to critical situations.

Gameplay

Main Campaign

As the very starting unit, Redneck is useful in the beginning of the game for mission completion. He is good at dispatching running enemies coming towards the bus and whittling down small hordes of enemies. Very quickly, players will learn to improve his stats using upgrade items and buy other units to fight alongside him.

Private Rodriguez is Redneck's direct upgrade as he boasts slightly higher damage, faster attack speed, and knocks enemies back on critical hits. However, he has a slightly longer preparation time compared to Redneck and is more prone to pausing during attacks. This flaw is trivial, however, since it hardly has any major effect on his abilities. Private is offensively more powerful, but Redneck still has a point in his favor with his team synergies.

Skirmish

In League, Redneck is useful mainly for low levels of Skirmish thanks to his low courage cost and fast movement speed. However, in later levels of PvP he is largely unviable due to his lack of perks and resistances. He will be killed by any ranged unit easily and his inconsistent attacks can also fail him against other melee units. He is best used at these levels as a meat shield for important units or luring dangerous opponents into a less favorable position.

Item Sets

Because of Redneck's cannon fodder design, which only gets accentuated further in the game, it's recommended to choose item sets that benefit his team more than himself. In general, that comes down to using Chef during mid-game, and Boss in the end-game, with the latter being the overall best option for Red. At early stages, Junk and Adventurer are both tolerable choices, but moving onto something more impactful as soon as possible is also highly advised.

Redneck is one of the few units for whom agility watches are strictly better than prep. time, since he already has a very short preparation time. Making him extremely spammable with preparation time decrease should be obtained through the extra stats on other items. Usually, a mere -1 sec decrease is enough, since there's a delay between each unit coming out of the bus. +% Health books are the go-to choice if you are using him for the Redneck team synergy. Otherwise, +% melee damage is also acceptable. It's advised against using crit. builds on him since he has a slow critical animation.

Redneck is also one of the few units for whom cost reduction is advised to be deliberately pursued, since -7 to -8 decrease makes him more accessible, and as a result exponentially more useful. However, this strategy is most effective with legendary items, otherwise you risk making your Redneck underpowered.

Skins and Synergies

Redneck, along with his respective skins, is a part of several teams: Rednecks, Mechanics, and College.

In all of the above teams, this unit is never a bad option. He is one of the key members of Rednecks, considering that he is largely treated as cannon fodder and allows more courage packs to be spawned. In the Mechanic team, he can easily heal the bus and spawn extra Turrets. Meanwhile, in the College team he is more of a generally good option, rather than someone who can get the most out of the synergy due to the overall poor unit rotation.

Trivia

  • According to Redneck's deleted backstory:
    • His name is Russell and his last name is MacLeod.
    • Private Rodriguez is his implied brother, and Farmer his implied father.
    • His farm may be the place where the old Halloween Event is set after the pumpkins have grown.
  • His third skin "Worthy" is a direct reference to Wirt, one of the protagonists of the 2014 Cartoon Network show 'Over the Garden Wall.' And being part of the Northerners team makes sense in that context; 'Over The Garden Wall' takes place entirely within a large, dark forest.
  • Despite being listed as a stars reward under his rarity level, Redneck is never unlocked in any way since he's an initially available unit. Additionally, he can't be seen anywhere in the star reward progress bar.
  • Before update 2.7.9, Mission 1 used to look different. There was a wooden house with a sign displaying an X-shaped cross made of two shovels. It's likely that this was where Redneck got his shovel.
  • Redneck appears in the Daily Gifts page for Gift 1 and 2 where he is seen opening different containers with his weapon. However, his sprite is based on the one he had prior to update 1.8.0.
