Turret is a tripod-mounted rotary-barrel sentry gun fed by an ammunition belt from a large green box magazine operated by an automatic feeding system with a constantly-spinning red lever. A red box-shaped motion sensor for activation is fastened to the top of the weapon with blue tape.

It can be unlocked for 18,000 coins at Player Level 11.

Functionality

Basics

It is a support item, meaning it can be used to support units on the field with direct control by players over where it's placed. It requires Rage to be deployed.

Turret is a simple but devastating stationary unit, boasting extreme ranged damage for its high rate of fire, but has low health, long preparation time and a high rage cost.

Perks and Abilities

Upon application, a sentry gun will be placed on the area the player selected. It will act as an obstacle once placed on the field, stalling most enemies until it is destroyed, where it will explode and leave a burning fire pool in its wake. The fire will destroy any corpses on the floor within its radius, preventing dead units from turning and/or stopping certain zombies from reviving. If a mission has Rainy Weather in it, Turret's fire pool will be extinguished immediately, although it is still possible to damage or kill enemies with the explosion and destroy corpses with the brief fire pool that's produced.

The range of Turret's detection is limited to only in front of itself but it does cover a decent amount of distance. When an enemy is detected, the motion sensor will begin to flash and emit a straight red light while making a start-up noise. Soon afterward, the gun is activated and fires wildly in a cone-shaped area in front of it at a rate of ten rounds per second. After its firing period ends, it goes into a three-second cooldown while taking 10 self-inflicted damage. The amount of bursts each Turret can fire will be increased by 1 every fifth upgrade. If destroyed by self-inflicted damage, the Turret merely disintegrates without exploding, then despawns.

In addition to its offensive capabilities, Turret also has the following undocumented perks.

  • Immunity to Poison and Knockback.
  • Immune to fire-based explosions, but not blood-based explosions from enemies such as Slob and Putrid.

Gameplay

Main Campaign

It can be safely said that Turret is one of the best rage abilities in the entire game due to its sheer firepower that can overwhelm durable threats very quickly while its average range keeps it away from the line of fire. It supplements ranged units surprisingly well and potentially extends the utility of melee units, making it a staple in almost any formation. It is at its best against the likes of tanky threats that have little to no bullet resistance, such as Big Blue/Crank, or to mow down hordes of moderately weak threats like Blue Runners. It also proves to be a very strong answer against hordes in the ever-escalating prevalence of Insectoid, Egg and Energy Sphere. Its high ROF greatly extends Egg's vulnerability time, putting its great DPS to good use, and being a support item, Insectoid cannot use its pounce ability while Energy Sphere cannot target it at all, resulting in them both being shredded fairly quickly. Turret easily benefits the Mechanic Team's 5/5 power (halves its self-damage) and Police Team's 2/2 power (doubles its firing period), both of which can significantly expand its presence. While it too can be healed by Welder and gain SP from his Level 13 Special Ability, Turret's poor base health often means 30% of it realistically won't extend its lifetime much, apart from being able to tank an otherwise lethal hit when granted SP.

Despite its extreme offensive capabilities, Turret is greatly hampered by several factors that must be worked around. A support item costing 25 rage with a 45s preparation time is a lot to ask for in fast-paced late-game stages, so other units would have to tag along for it to work, and it can't be realistically the only source of ranged damage, as even if it doesn't take damage, it will eventually break down. Speaking of damage, its low health and explosion means it should be positioned properly, as despite its short delay between bursts, it is very much vulnerable during that period. Its short detection range can also be a problem against Charged Zombies, as while it can shred them, it does requires a slower threat to trigger its attack, which in turn can potentially block it. Finally, Turret, despite its high ROF, won't be able to do much against bullet-resistant threats like Twins and SWAT, which must be dealt with otherwise.

Turret is often compared to Builder Abby's ranged attack. While Abby's access to upgrade items allow for more frequent deployments and higher burst damage, her massive courage/unlock cost, single-use attack and Insectoid equivalent transformation on death often leaves Turret the more desirable option.

Skirmish

While Turret is unavailable in League, it can be summoned through Specops' special ability. Turret isn't very practical in league, as its very low health and brief wind-up period means it can be easily sniped and destroyed at range, not to mention the prevalence of bullet-resistant units that withstand its attacks easily or ranged units that stay away from its line of fire.

Trivia

  • A lone Turret can be seen in the back of a pickup truck in the very first mission of the game, seemingly hinting at the source of the Turrets that Bill is able to acquire.
