Skins are special cosmetics that change the way units appear aesthetically and change their team affiliation. Skins might be as simple as a slight outfit change, or as detailed as giving units a specific change in their animations.

By themselves, skins are mainly cosmetic and do not have any direct pros or cons from their regular counterparts. However, skins can change the original unit's team affiliation, allowing them to synergize with those from other teams. Currently, there are a few skins that do not have a team assigned to them.

Players have an option to switch between skins by checking the unit's stats menu and tapping on the arrows.

Purchasing

Skins offered at the Military Kit Shop are only purchasable with money. All skins are individually available for purchase at any time through the team menu, with only a few seasonal exceptions (Desperado skin for Diaz which is only available during October 31st and Carol Flannel skin which is only available to purchase during November 21st). Such exclusives must be purchased either during a certain period, or obtained randomly through cases during the annual events.

Some skins are bundled together in packs at a discount, which can also be found through the advertised unit in the team menu. This only applies to units that have more than one skin available for purchase or common units that the player has yet to hire that has at least one purchasable skin. In the case of the latter, the purchase of the unit themselves is done using money instead of coins.

In general, most purchasable skins are worth 300 money/5,000 tokens. However, Officer Pepper and 1998 are worth 120 money/2,000 tokens, and Hillbilly Redneck is worth 20 money.

Trivia

  • Before update 2.8.2, the "Officer Pepper" and "1998" skins used to be called "Policeman Judi" and "Builder 1998" respectively.
    • The skin name "Policeman Judi" is likely a reference to Pepper's name in the game files where she's listed as "Judi" which in turn is a reference to Judy Hopps from Zootopia.
  • Before update 3.2.0, the "Desperado" skin used to be called "Policeman Diego".
  • Before update 3.2.6, skins had to be bought as special offers in Military Kit Shop. They also had animated backgrounds, starting from update 2.8.6.
  • Several skins have a reference:
    • The entire College team wears high school uniforms that resemble those from the 1998 horror movie The Faculty. Builder's skin's name is also a reference to the movie's release date.
    • The Clown Chopper skin is a reference to It, known more popularly as Pennywise the Dancing Clown, from Stephen King's 1986 horror novel of the same name. Its design, in particular, is inspired by the recent film adaptations of the novel.
    • The Carol Flannel, Glenn Pines, and Nurse Hirsch skins are a reference to Wendy Corduroy, Dipper Pines, and Mabel Pines from Gravity Falls.
    • The Glenn Woods name is a reference to Frank Woods from Call of Duty series.
    • The Dale skin for Farmer is named after Dale Horvath from The Walking Dead.
    • The Liquidator skin is a reference to the hazmat suits worn by Walter White and Jessie Pinkman from the TV series Breaking Bad.
    • The Dr. Sanchez skin is based on and is a direct reference to Rick Sanchez from the animated TV series Rick and Morty.
    • The Worthy skin is a reference to Wirt from Over the Garden Wall.
  • The Rebel skin's background reuses elements from various missions in stage 6.
  • There is a bug where the Desperado skin will make Policeman reload his weapon much quicker than his regular counterpart, giving the skin a significant yet unintended advantage.
    • Oddly, this bug was patched in the update after the one where the Desperado skin was introduced and somehow reintroduced in the very next update.
  • The Christmas Mechanic skin has a single frame during Mechanic's additional damage attack where his sleeves will suddenly revert to its regular appearance along with a single blue pixel before immediately returning to the skin's appearance.
  • The Christmas Mechanic and Christmas Welder skins in-game ended up looking different from their appearance in the update banner where they were first shown.
  • Winter Sonya used to be named Prepper Sonya according to a teaser image prior. It was changed before her official inclusion in the game.
