Gambling (Item Set)

Gambling is a mid-to-late game item set. It consists of posh items typically used or handled by casino staff.

Items

Gambling items are available in both epic and legendary qualities. The set includes the following items:

Set Bonus

This set adds 25% to the critical chance value of its wearer while they are at 99% health or lower. For example, a unit with +60% crit. chance would have a total crit chance of 85%. Healing to full HP after triggering the effect will disable it, but it can always be reactivated.

Because of the buff's additive nature, units with 0% crit. chance become able to land criticals too, should they trigger Gambling's effect.

Analysis

Gambling set is a bit of an odd case. It theoretically acts as a great option for crit. oriented units, but in practice only a few of them might actually want to stick to this set. Units that meaningfully benefit from the set include:

• Rogue, who can become a true stunlocker with this set's bonus in combination with a level 12 + crit, chance book, as his critical hits are almost as fast as his normal ones.
• Builder, who can perform consistent, rapid critical hits that also knock back targets. As they are faster than his normal attacks, he also gains a boost to DPS.
• Juggernaut in context of missions where his explosive slam critical hit are more beneficial, as he will land them more often, deleting horde after horde.

Most other crit. oriented units either suffer from downsides that make Gambling's effect undesirable, or have their own means of acquiring higher crit. rate:

• Both Saw and Cashier have 60% base crit. chance. This is already a high value, and all it takes to make it near guaranteed is a respective level-12 book. For these two, Gambling is usually an overkill even without crit. chance books. It can even backfire at times, as they both land crits slower than their usual attacks.
• Berserker can benefit from Gambling properly, but it becomes irrelevant after unlocking his level 13 ability, as it's effectively an improved equivalent of this set.
• Jailer's critical hit animation is too slow. This prevents him from consistently stun-locking enemies, and even puts him at risk, as some enemies are swift enough to land a hit on him while he is winding up his strike.
• The aforementioned issue with slow crit. animations also applies to Redneck, Firefighter, and Chopper.
• Even at higher levels, Rodriguez's low health makes it too dangerous to use Gambling set on him. It's possible to strategically damage him with barrels, but that option is only accessible when Private is effectively maxed out.
• While the earlier statement about Juggernaut is true, it doesn't applies to him in context of Skirmish. In general, he rarely ever gets an opportunity to land a blow in this mode, and acts more as a meat shield, making protective sets more preferable.

Despite the above information, Gambling can still see use as a generalist option for melee units through mid-game, at least until players can get easier access to Gentleman. It should be a safe bet to rely on this set instead of other available legendary options in case you struggle to acquire them.

Trivia

• Prior to update 3.8.6, there existed an error that caused Gambling's bonus to increase crit. chance by 125% instead of the intended value. This effectively caused units to use only their critical attacks, providing a massive advantage.
