Enemies (DA)
Zombies are enemies that the player encounters while playing the game.
There's a total of 21 different zombies and 2 bosses in the game. Majority of them have no official names, and so their monikers have been coined by the community or based off their appearance in Zombie Warfare.
Out of all zombies in Dead Ahead, only 9 of them would come back in Zombie Warfare. The list of returning enemies includes: Free Hugs, Tipsy, Cop, Builder, Fast Zombie, and Runner. Some enemies returned under different names: Mooner became the basic Zombie, Banshee became the Witch, and Boomer became the Fat Zombie.
Gameplay
The role of enemies in Dead Ahead depends on their category.
Running
Running zombies provide the biggest threat, as they are able to stop the bike and end current game session as a result. Chasers can be gunned down with weapons, lured into hitting an obstacle or an idle zombie, or rode over by a bike in case they've managed to run past the player.
In each of the five locations, the chasing zombies have a set amount of starting health. As the player progresses further, runners' durability increases. Their speed is determined at the time they are spawned. It's always slightly higher than that of the player's vehicle at the moment. For instance, if some Jogger spawned while player was driving at 80 km/h, she would run at roughly 90 km/h.
Banshee is a special running zombie, who charges at the player once she gets close enough at them. She is the only chaser zombie who has a unique ability.
Idle
Idle zombies pose no threat for the player, and can be safely ran over in order to increase the combo chain. Some of them might be slowly walking, what causes barely any inconvenience. All idle zombies have a single point health, guaranteeing that every weapon will instakill them.
Boomer is a special idle zombie who explodes on death, dealing AoE damage to all other enemies in range.
Trash and Machinegunner are special, very rarely spawning zombies, who must be killed in order to unlock Slums area and Double Trouble bike, respectively.
Boss
Bosses are a special enemy that spawns once roughly every kilometer traveled. It has a very high amount of health, increasing by anywhere from none at all to about 50% with each sequential boss. It always moves slightly faster than the player, but it gets pushed back by whatever shots hit it. Bosses in harder areas additionally have more health and scale up faster.
Once it catches up to the bike, the Boss will jump and do a ground slam that is guaranteed to kill the biker if it's not avoided fast enough. This slam forces the Boss to stop for a split second, giving the player a little time to get proper distance between them and the boss.
The Boss can jump onto vehicles and run on top of them. It also ignores ramps, and can slam into idle zombies, killing them without slowing down.
Starting from rank 11, there's a chance that one of the bosses you encounter will get replaced with a Superboss. It functions exactly the same as the regular Boss, but has about as much health as the next further regular boss, and has a different sprite. Once a Superboss is killed, it won't appear again for the rest of your current run.
Combo
Combo is a counter of how many kills the player has managed to land in a row. Combos are important, as they contribute a lot to the player's reward at the end of each run. The higher the combo, the more coins it adds.
In order to start the chain, the player needs to kill at least 2 enemies. The maximum allowed limit between each taken down enemy is 3 seconds. If the player takes longer than that to do another kill, the chain resets back to 1. Neither of Bosses contribute to combo.
There are certain combo milestones, upon reaching which a text will pop up at the top of the screen, with an announcer shouting it out:
- 10 kills: Nice combo!
- 20 kills: Killing spree!
- 30 kills: Unstoppable!
- 50 kills: Monster kill!
- 70 kills: Incredible!
- 100 kills: Unbelievable!
Trivia
- Trash, Machinegunner, and Convict are the only idle zombies without death animations – they simply explode into a blood splatter. Among runner zombies, Banshee suffers from the same issue.
- In the earliest versions of the game there was a special zombie that looked like an undead version of the Hero. It always spawned at the spot where the player has died during their previous run.
