Much stronger than the other infected and seems to be resistant to fire. There's something wrong with its arm, maybe it's related?

Brute is an infected marauder armed with an axe, and dressed in a black open vest with a breast pocket, black pants, a black cap, and a neck chain. His empty arm has a tourniquet wrapped around his bicep, followed by a heavily infected forearm covered in and deformed by blue energy. Streaks of blue energy also appear on his stomach and across his face, displaying physical signs of dangerously high infection exposure.

Overview

Brute is the marauder counterpart of heavyweight units, possessing very high health but slow move speed. He has resistances to fire damage and knockback.

As a human, Brute is able to move towards closest detected enemies, is susceptible to fear, and can navigate around fire pools. He will attack Generator and Turret when he is near them, but will ignore any other stationary items. Some time after dying, he turns into a Tough Blue.

Strategy

Marauders ganging up on two Tough Blues that transformed from Brutes. All damage to the barricade was done by TBs.

Brute serves as a tank for the marauders. Thus, he will take more damage on average to take down. However, besides fire and knockback not being as effective against him as on another marauders, Brute isn't that big of an issue to deal with. Well-equipped ranged units can reliably kill him before he gets too close, and melees with knockback are still able to keep him at bay. The real danger of Brute lies in his ability to transform into a Tough Blue, who has several times his health and an extremely powerful AoE critical. Because of this, it is actually highly encouraged to use fire to burn Brute to ashes or destroy his corpse before he can revive. Rage abilities like Red Barrel will prove invaluable in killing Brute and destroying his corpse before it can get worse. Flamethrower will also prove particularly effective as long as his damage is adequate and he is backed up by his team to deal with other enemies.

Despite the above information, it's worth mentioning that Brute's transformation can be surprisingly helpful for the player. Considering that marauders attack not just Bill's units but zombies as well, it's effectively guaranteed that they will try to deal with the Tough Blue that will arise after the death of any of the Brutes. In turn, TB will start facing to the right, attacking Marauders that pester it, while always coming out victorious thanks to its powerful slam and very high health. It's even possible for TB to "help" player's units with destruction of the barricade, as zombies are able to damage it during marauder missions. That said, it's important to rememeber that this tactic is largely reliant on luck and won't always be applicable. It's only realistic to attempt it if a Brute you left unburnt has died on the second half of the battlefield, closer to the barricade. Otherwise, it's better to just destroy the corpse.

Trivia

  • A poll on the official Discord server was created to decide Brute's name before he was given one. Out of ten different names, "Bruiser" won in the polls with 26% of the total votes. However, Brute was ultimately decided despite only being the third most voted name with just 15% of the total votes.
    • Interestingly, in the same poll, the name "Tough Blue," a name tied for second last with only 4% of the total votes would be the name given to his infected form.
  • Brute, Robber, and Skull are the only marauders in the game who aren't present in the Corn Farm event.
